What do folders actually do?

The documentation mentions them, but gives no examples of how they work or how they are envisioned to be used. For example, what distinguishes a folder from a collection or smart list?

You can put collections inside a folder, i.e. you could have all your smart collections inside a folder (to save space in the source column) or sub-sort collections that way.
