New Users Online Library Comments & Suggestions

Post by FineWine »

The "New Users Online Library" is Oh so awesome.

Suggestions:

1 - Books library to be able to sort & display by author as well as title.
2 - Across all libraries add the function to be able to search by: title, series, actor, author etc.
3 - Within the pedia's add a new 'Field' box called Doghouse which automatically displays the Doghouse entry number. This could then be coded into the 'Details'/'Style' view using a new Tag [key:doghouse].
4 - On the browser's page tab it only displays 'Doghouse |'. Would it not be better to display 'Owners Name Doghouse DVD Library' e.g. 'Joe's Doghouse Book Library'
5- Add instruction at top of page: 'Click on entry cover art or title to display more detail'. A friend of mine who is not very computer literate pointed out this one.

Sorry do not have CD & Game pedia so can not comment on them. Perhaps those owners can.

Cheers

Thank you for the feedback Finewine.

1. and 2. we want to get done before the official release, but wanted to get the beta out early to make sure that users would use the feature and to get this exact feedback to know that a library search would be useful.
3. We wanted the dog tag to be almost invisible so that users would not need to worry about it. But true that each day with more integration online it becomes more important. It is currently available for the details view as [key:dogTag] if anybody wants to embed it into a customized view. Not sure if will add it as a field as unlike all the other fields it's not editable by the user and hence might confuse users if displayed in the add/edit view.
4. That is a great idea. Thank you.
5. We shall update the design of the listing to have a "Details" or "More" link so that it's obvious to non Doghouse users that there is more information available.

Thanks for the reply.

Did not realise there was a [key:dogTag]

I do have displayed the Doghouse List View column which automatically does show the Doghouse number upon entry upload.

With the [key:dogTag] in details view I was thinking, for myself, of substituting the Doghouse number for just the image of Bruji (if this is possible) Using the IF statement this then would appear automatically as an indication that I have uploaded the entry to Doghouse. Or perhaps this could be a hard coded in as a user choice switch on/off feature from your end. As you know I like very visual self explanatory UI's.

The search and sort functions would be great.

Cheers

EDIT: Just noticed that there is no Bruji favicon in the URL address bar or on the page Tabs for the new Doghouse library page

You should be able to use the tag to display an image. The important information is that the [key:dogTag] has to appear somewhere or the code does not look for the if tags. So something like this should work:

Code: Select all

<!--IFdogTag <img src="awesomeDogIcon.png" ref="[key:dogTag]"> ENDdogTag-->
More icons is something that I want to work into future versions of the Pedias. Including sound icons and language flags have always been prime to receive that treatment in the details view.

Thanks for pointing out the missing fav icon, working with new Ruby server that is hard to wrangle and make sure he stops deleting items. As each deploy updates all the assets for Doghouse.

I have updated the Online Library so that you can now reorder books by Title and Author. The ordering might seem strange when there are multiple authors for one title, but the database is taking into account all the author's names, not just the first one.

I'll see about putting those instructions on clicking the title or image for more info as you suggested.

Cheers.

Thank you Conor that code worked a treat. I used a small black bruji dog and then href the image to my own library page and placed it all before the Title in the Details view Header bar. (I changed the spelling error scr to src )

Look forward to a more visual release.

Actually there are no fav icons throughout the entire Doghouse website.

I'm working on the icons, but just wanted to say I've reworked all the online library pages with improvements, more info here: http://www.bruji.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... 426#p23426

So do please le me know if anything breaks since this required a number of changes under the hood.

Added the favicon and fixed an issue with permissions on the first visit to an online library so if anyone was having issues before, this will hopefully clear them.

Wait. What? What are we talking about here: New Users Online Library Comments & Suggestions?

[EDIT] Never mind, I've been away for a while. I'll look and play around a bit before commenting again.

Hi,
I'm just adding all my CDs to my CDpedia-Library also to show them online. Well, of course the online database is only recently launched but here are some more ideas to make this interesting feature even more useful:
6 the user should have options to show more data fields, I think especially Genre and personal rating might be interesting
7 how about an advanced search (similar to 2 but I don't see it yet) and/or filter (again especially Genre) features?
8 a possibility to show my collections (ideally to choose individually for each) might be useful.

One of my main application of the online database at the moment would be to link it to people who want to find a gift for me - now they can easily see what I have and like and find something that might even surprise me and I like it. That might help to understand my suggestions better.

Or maybe a better way would be to be able to publish by Collection e.g. Wish List

This of course would be user selectable.

It's such a complex database system that we wanted to start simple and add features as we expand the online library. We already have the framework in place to add the personalized rating as that would be quite useful. Thanks for the feedback, Alex is currently working hard on the new feature and I am sure it will be useful as guidance.
