MacOS Sequoia

Post by SteveFitz »

Has anyone updated to Sequoia on the Mac? Has it had any effect on the Pedias? I appreciate that the Pedias are on hiatus, and one programme shouldn't stop me from upgrading, but CDpedia and Bookpedia are very important to me and I don't want them to crash through incompatibility.

I'm currently running Sonoma and the Pedias work fine on that.

Cheers, Steve

I have updated to macOS Sequoia and I am running version 7 beta of Bookpedia, CDpedia and DVDpedia.

While I haven't done some intense editing in these apps, I can confirm they all launched without and errors.

Cheers DanThe.

If anyone is interested in good news: My pedias are working fantastic with Mojave 10.14.6.
I would upgrade but I live on an island. My downloads are only available with an antenna.
That would take years - or centuries. Who knows.

I'm the guy you can call "Old fashioned"!

Best regards from the past

Has anyone run Bookpedia version 6.2.1 on Sequoia? Because Amazon US lookup is broken on version 7, I still use version 6.2.1, and I am curious if that version runs under Sequoia.

Thanks!

HEADS UP

With the release of macOS 15.0 Sequoia you must do the following to enable sync'ing between macOS and Pocketpedia:

To allow or revoke Pocketpedia app's access to your local network on a Mac, you do the following:

1. Select the Apple menu, then System Settings
2. Click Privacy & Security in the sidebar
3. Click Local Network
4. Turn the ability to access your local network on or off for each app listed

Thanks to mindzeye for this very helpful hint. Bookpedia 7 no longer syncing with Pocketpedia app

ep Happy Christmas to me as I now have a Mac mini M4 24GB + 1TB storage. Also a 34" Dell P3424WEB monitor. And wow just wow.

Hint - don't use Migration Assistant. 7 hours to migrate approx 800,000 files using Time Machine. Not including Media as that is on a separate Ext 5TB HD. You end up with so much old crap plus in my case Sequoia mail kept throwing up errors and crashing. Spent a couple of hours on phone with Apple and in the end copied over, manually, from within Time Machine, all the Data files, selective Pref files and Application Support files I wanted and then did a total erase and install. Prior to that I had made a list of all the app's I needed, downloaded the latest versions for Sequoia, a couple I had to pay a new license for the upgrade but that is OK.

PS: Mac mini's only have Thunderbolt 4/USB C, NOT USB ports. So had to get a USB to Thunderbolt adapter from Apple as all my external stuff, including Apple keyboard is USB. I plugged an USB 4 port hub into the adapter and all is good. As time goes by I will upgrade to a full Apple Bluetooth keyboard and other such peripherals that use Thunderbolt 4/USB C ports & cables.

As I have never done a total eraser install since 2007, my first Apple Mac, and only done upgrades and Migration Assistant I believe I have gained at least 3 - 4 GB of disk space, maybe more.

Now I am a very happy camper with a lean mean machine.  And yes the latest updated Pedia's all work.

Congrats on the M4 Mac mini! And version 7 now works with Amazon? Nice! For me, the last time I tried, it was broken [see prior thread I posted here...somewhere...I will find it and update this reply with a link.

The mini is a powerful computer and with that monitor - wow indeed! Must be an awesome upgrade/setup! :)

[This is meant to be a caution when switching to a new Mac — the main one for me being that I wiped the 2018 Mac Mini for my daughter before realizing I had issues with Gamepedia. I’ve also gone into some detail for the developer in case Gamepedia is still being maintained.]

I just moved to a Mac Mini M4 from a 2018 Mac Mini (intel). Both were running Sequoia (15.4.1). I set up the M4 using Time Machine and afterwards, Bookpedia worked fine.

However, Gamepedia version 7.0 lost the nearly 2,000 board game listings that I had in its database even though it initially showed the totals for the 3 default folders and the smart folders I had created in the application’s sidebar. Clicking on any folder changed the count to 0. Closing and re-opening Gamepedia showed the original listing counts in just the smart folders but clicking on them set their counts back to 0 again.

I checked the Library > Caches > Metadata > CoreData > Gamepedia folder and found that it was empty even when I checked for hidden files so there didn’t seem to be a possible file there to aid in recovery.

I attempted to load a past saved library database both by double-clicking its file and by importing it from inside Gamepedia. Both approaches added a folder at the bottom of the sidebar with the name of my previously saved library.

In both instances, Gamepedia would not allow me to drag the imported library listings to the main Library or Wishlist folders at the top of the sidebar.

Dragging a URL from BGG to Gamepedia gave the editing window for the game (all my original and customized fields were still present) which I could edit and save. However, the entry would be saved to the imported library collection but could not be saved or moved to Gamepedia’s main Library folder. Quitting Gamepedia and restarting it would show the changes only in the imported library folder

(SideNote: The imported library still showed the star icon for the Wishlist entries.)

I attempted to go to the Bruji website to download another copy of Gamepedia for a clean install but the site seems to be in some disarray and clicking on the Gamepedia download button always gives me a “Too Many Requests” error.

With Gamepedia’s features and ease of use, it would be quite sad to lose it; I haven’t found a database for board games that comes close — not to mention trying to switch over a couple of thousand entries.

If anyone is aware of an alternate download site or a very similar database application, please let me know.
(I just downloaded "BGG Catalog" from the Mac App Store which seems nice but I have my doubts as to how well it can replace Gamepedia.)

Welcome to these great forums for things Bruji Pedia.

Yes there appears to be a website problem at the moment and I have emailed Conor.

Re your own Gamepedia problems. Have you read this informative sticky topic? Pedia Maintenance Practices

Also, when you have imported your games, and they appear as an "Imported Library" right-click on that entry and select 'Include Collection in Library'.

And finally you should just be able to copy and paste from your backup location the entire contents of ~/Library/Application Support/gamepedia then fire up gamepedia by holding the Option key whilst click on the Dock icon and choose location of Database.

Also, from your backup, you can bring across your Preference setup ~/Library/Preferences/com.brujigamepedia.plist pasting it into the same location.

Thank you, FineWine; your quick reply gave me what I needed.

I tried right-clicking on the imported library and selecting 'Include Collection in Library.' However, this resulted in the following error:

“Could not Save Changes
The database in memory is not in a valid state
and will be reloaded from the hard disk.”

However, the Option-Restart suggestion you made worked perfectly. The only drawback was that the most recent useable database in the folder was backup1Month. gamepd, dated April 17th. Still, this is infinitely better than what I was facing, and I should be able to fill in the very small percentage of what I lost, so what you provided is quite a relief. I will be looking over the other Pedia files and especially your link to Pedia Maintenance Practices.

I have not yet found anything in the Mac or Windows world that compares to the presentation, ease of use, customization, and completeness of Gamepedia and the other Pedia applications. I’ve read that Conor has other obligations that prevent him from devoting as much as he might like to the Pedia applications, but I’m wondering if he would consider a crowdfunding show of support for the work that he and those who work with him have done, such as those by The Dice Tower and various board game cafes. I find Gampedia invaluable for tracking board game art and design and would be happy to contribute in addition to paying for the version upgrades—just a thought.

Again, thank for your help, it is greatly appreciated.

This was properly due to the program becoming confused with what version of program to version of database you have or had.

Yes, this error still pops up occasionally for me as well. The reason for this is the pedia's are very strict with the formats and if everything is not validated correctly it decides not to add the entry and reload. So even the slightest file corruption or error, and it becomes upset, it is not very forgiving. This of course is because the pedia's underlaying code is written in C++, a powerful, general-purpose programming language, and SQLite is the programs' database management library language that manages the relational database of the pedia's and interacts with C++ to provide, generally, an overall fast and smoothly running relational cataloguing program.

This is why best practices with any database programs, particularly with major whole number version updates, is to start afresh as opposed to an overwrite. And of course you should avoid overwriting databases from backups, but instead delete the old database before bringing in the fresh backup version. So save your database and, maybe, your Preference files and delete all else. Then just bring these two back to their proper home locations and repoint the pedia to them. 😁

I am a huge believer in BACKUP, BackUp, backup. I personally use Time Machine and a monthly off site backup using Carbon Copy Cloner. TM has saved my arse many a time. 🎓
