Hello, since this is my first post in the forums and I'm leading off with a problem, let me set the context by saying that I am a very satisfied DVDPedia user; it does a lot for me and is a good value. But I recently moved from a PowerPC PowerBook (initially set up on Panther) to a new MacBook (running Leopard on Intel), and also updated to DVDPedia 4.1.3, and have since been having some problems.
I get the following error after running the "Get Advanced Info for Selection > IMDB" command on a dozen items. I then get the same error when attempting to quit the application, which is prevented, necessitating a Force Quit. Here's the error message:
"Action Required
Part of the path to the database file is not writable; check the permissions on /Users. Data was not saved."
Here are my permissions all along the path:
Hard Drive: 755 root/admin
. Users: 755 root/admin
.. myuser: 755 myuser/staff
... Library: 700 myuser/staff
.... Application Support: 700 myuser/staff
..... DVDPedia: 755 myuser/staff
...... Database.pediadata: 600 myuser/staff
So what is the trouble here? One thought I had was that perhaps with Leopard's stricter permissions, maybe something along the path needs to be corrected to allow DVDPedia to edit/save properly. If any permission is wrong, what should be corrected? Any other solution? Thanks in advance.
"Path to the database file is unwritable" error
Thank you for the bug report. I have updated DVDpedia so that it does no give you the incorrect error message (it was getting confused on the permissions of the "User" folder because root is the owner and it thinks it can't write to the contents of that folder). Download DVDpedia again (the beta mentioned on the other post will also have the fix) and it will give you the correct error that it encountered while saving. There is still a bug there with get advance info, two other users have reported it but we haven't been able to reproduce it. You will have to force quit DVDpedia and run the Get Advance Info command again, but if you run the command on the same selection and experience the bug again it is excellent news as it means you could email us your database if you don't mind and we be able to reproduce the bug). Please do send us as much information about that error, the new version will print the error to your console log as it will not be confused about the Users folder permissions. Let us know as much about the series of steps as possible so that we can reproduce it and fix it.
This happens because the new version of DVDpedia is very strict and refuses to save if anything is slightly off, in the case of this bug it has to do with having credits that are not associated with a DVD, and therefore are orphaned. Sorry for the inconvenience of being so strict but it allows us to catch this type of rare bug, get them fixed, and keep the database in a perfect state for all DVDpedia users.
