Alphabetical listing: Ignore foriegn articles
Hi there!
this is the feature that I'd really like to be integrated for future versions of DVDpedia...
the alphabetical listing ignores the english articel "the". so "The Lord of the Rings" will be listed L and not T.
unfortunately DVDpedia doesn't know the german articles "Der" "Die" "Das"...
being a german user, half of my dvd-collection is now listed D.
can't you change that?
thanks!
Martin

Re: Alphabetical listing: Ignore foriegn articles
Go into your Preferences and check the option to 'Ignore foreign articles during title sort' (Artikel in der Spalte Titel ignorieren). That'll tell the program to ignore non-English articles as well when the title column is sorted.

Re: Alphabetical listing: Ignore foriegn articles
thanks for your reply, and sorry for not seeing the feature was already there!
I guess I somehow misunderstood the word "Artikel" in the preferences... thought it would refer to an article - in the sense of story / plot summary / whatever...
thanks for your great work!

If you can think of a better German translation for 'article', do let me know so we can make that preference option easier to understand in the future. ("Geschlechtswort" sounded just a little too scholarly for my taste... )

I think "Artikel" is the best word. "Geschlechtswort" wouldn't match very well. Das geht nun mal garnicht.

Re: Alphabetical listing: Ignore foriegn articles
I just realized, it doesn't matter if I have checked "ignore articels in the title field" or if it's not checked. DVDpeda sort the movies as if there is no article. so "The Lord of the Rings" is listet at L. That happens with every movie. I have version 4.2.2.

Re: Alphabetical listing: Ignore foriegn articles
the german word "Artikel" is absolutely the right word. I just got it wrong, because it has this double-meaning, just like the english word "article".
but.....
like TheMatador says, checking the option in the preferences has no effect at all.
the german titels starting "der / die / das" are still listed "D".
I tried restarting DVDpedia, and retyping the titel - no effect.
maybe you can give me another hint...?
or did I discover a bug, after all?!
thanks!

Try clicking on another column and then back on title, to make sure the new setting is taken into account.
It's hard to describe the feature as "Foreign" means something different depending on your native language. The feature does not disable English articles. "The" is always ignored. To sort "The Lord of the Rings" under L use the sort title filed. You can enable it in the preferences, then enter "Lord of the Rings" into that field to ignore "The". You only need to fill out the titles that have an article in their name."The Lord of the Rings" is listet at L.

clicking on another column and back actually resolves the problem!Conor wrote:Try clicking on another column and then back on title, to make sure the new setting is taken into account.
funny, because restarting the software and retyping the title did not.
however, my german titles are now where they're supposed to be!
thanks a lot!

Re: Alphabetical listing: Ignore foriegn articles
by the way...
in the german localisation of DVDpedia the preferences-option reads
"Artikel in der Spalte 'Titel' ignorieren". which means "ignore articles in the title-column"
maybe you would want to change the wording into:
"Nicht-englische Artikel (z.B. 'der', 'die', 'das') in der Spalte 'Titel' ignorieren"
which means "ignore non-english articles (e.g. 'der' 'die' 'das') in the title-column".
the french localisation would need to have 'le' 'la' 'les' as explanation in brackets.
that's just a thought...
however, I'm fine now!
thanks again!

Re: Alphabetical listing: Ignore foriegn articles
Ah, now it works .
I missunderstood the phrase "ignore articles in the title-column". I thougt the english article "the" is affected to. But this just affects the foreign articles. So it would be better to change the phrase or to make "the" also be affected by this setting.
But those are really really minor things.

Code: Select all
"Nicht-englische Artikel (z.B. 'der', 'die', 'das') in der Spalte 'Titel' ignorieren"

Re: Alphabetical listing: Ignore foriegn articles
yep, I guess it would improve the situation at least a bit....Nora wrote:That's probably a bit long for the preference window but with the example taken out it should fit. (And still be obvious enough, no?)
the thing is, we have two minor misunderstandings in the wording right now:
1. my first thought was that "article" would refer to a text, or a summary or something like that. hardly anyone thinks of grammar at that point
2. the preference window doesn't say, that the english "the" will be ignored anyway...
without the example in brackets we would only rule out the secound point, but it wouldn't have helped me, because I ran into the first trap.
on the other hand - some users might be cleverer than me
