iSight camera not grabbing barcodes

Hi
I like Bookpedia/CDpedia but recently my iSight camera is just about useless for inputting books/CDs. I know that this has been an issue in the past.
I use to have little trouble with the iSight but now my arm is getting tired holding books at different angles, tipping the screen to get a different state of illumination of the book etc etc etc.
I'm using Bookpedia 4.6.1 on a MacBookPro 2007 vintage, running 10.6.4 with the following iSight camera
Built-in iSight:
Product ID: 0x8502
Vendor ID: 0x05ac (Apple Inc.)
Version: 1.45
Serial Number: E0635922AE578FBC (03.01)
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: Apple Inc.
Location ID: 0xfd400000

Any thoughts?
BTW the text on the books is reversed (I understand that the iSight is supposed to work this way). I assume that the pedias are supposed to work with a reversed image...
