it seems like there must be a simple way of doing this in dvdpedia, but i can't think of it for the life of me...

Hold down the option key while clicking on the directors column. (If the column is already sorted, click on another column first and then back to Director with the option key held down.)

you're the bestest. But it seems like there should be a simpler way to do this in future versions.

You only have to do it once. It will remember the settings, holding down option again will flip it back to first name.

How about defaulting to last name in the next update and letting users who want to sort by first name use the option key?
